Welcome, welcome to Caraval! The grandest show on land or by sea. Inside you'll experience more wonders than most people see in a lifetime. You can sip magic from a cup and buy dreams in a bottle. But before you fully enter into our world, you must remember it's all a game. We will try to convince you it's real, but all of it is a performance. A world built of make-believe. So while we want you to get swept away, be careful of being swept too far away. Dreams that come true can be beautiful, but they can also turn into nightmares when people won't wake up.

—Jovan, Caraval

Jovan is a performer in Caraval.

Appearance[]

Jovan is pretty with dark brown skin. She has a bright demeanor.

Personality[]

Jovan is portrayed as friendly, bright, helpful, and cheerful. She is kind, but a little mysterious. She likes riddles and games. As a performer, Jovan is a good actor and can be very dramatic. She is fierce, but compassionate and loving. She is a very open person who you can confide in. She is really good at keeping secrets. She is fearless, but not a very good leader. She is, however, very strategic. She can be deceptive. She isn’t resourceful, but she loves to perform, and make people happy. She is cooperative, persuasive, and dependable, but sometimes, can get a little too “into character.” She is creative, brave, and funny, but sometimes, you can’t tell if she is telling the truth, being sarcastic, or trying to be funny. She is also hardworking, but not very organized, but her patience makes up for it. She is very optimistic and adventurous. She likes to try new things and is very outgoing. Jovan loves biking on her unicycle. Jovan is one of Legend's friendliest performers.

Plot[]

Jovan is the performer who welcomes players into the game of Caraval. However, she does more than just greet them, she is often a clue disguised as a friendly face. She will point people in the direction they need to go to find the next clue. Her friendly disposition is an invaluable skill as it is used to reassure those in danger of going mad that Caraval is really only a game.

Caraval[]

Jovan greets people as they enter Caraval. Julian and Scarlett see her riding a unicycle while reading the warning that all people who participate in Caravel hear upon entering.

Scarlett and Julian meet Jovan again when she is the one sailing their boat on the first morning of Caraval. When Scarlett asks if she was the one on the unicycle last night, Jovan replies that she does "lots of things."[1] Jovan points out things to see while they make their way to Castillo Maldito. She tells Scarlett that there is lots to see on the island, and that if you're willing to pay and look hard enough you can find things you won't come across anywhere else. Some people just come to go to the shops and don't even bother playing the game. She drops them off at the Castillo.

Jovan helps Tella sneak out from her tower room multiple times.

Legendary[]

When Tella and Dante arrive at Idyllwild Castle for the opening night of Caraval, they are greeted by Jovan. She is dressed as Jester Mad. Jovan begins her welcome speech, but Tella interrupts her saying she already knows it. Jovan responds that this greeting is different from the one for the last game of Caraval.

Her welcome to this edition of Caraval is: "Welcome, welcome to Caraval, the grandest show by land or by sea. Inside you may come face-to-face with a Fate, or steal bits of destiny. As fantastical as Caraval might feel, the next five nights are very real. Elantine has invited us here to save the Empire from her greatest fear. For centuries the Fates were locked away, but now they wish to come out and play. If they regain their magic the world will never be the same, but you can help stop them by winning the game. To do this you must be clever and follow the clues to find the dark object that can destroy them forever. Once you have it, Legend will give you a prize so rare I’m not allowed to utter it here.”[2] Jovan then lifts up into the ceiling, and a red card with charred edges drops down with the words of her greeting on it.

Later, Jovan is dressed as The Undead Queen.

Finale[]

Jovan first appears in the dungeons to tell Legend about a wedding party turned to stone by the Poisoner. Jovan is also there when Scarlett's powers cause her to black out. Later, Jovan is with the rest of Legend's performers when they meet the Maiden Death and the Assassin. Jovan doesn't trust them saying, "Anyone who uses a 'the' in front of their name is never trustworthy." Legend then orders Jovan to sneak in to the Menagerie Ruins to make sure Scarlett stays safe.
